Vocal Massage

What is Vocal Massage and who is it for?

Differing from vocal osteopathy and vocal physiotherapy, our approach uses gentle, integrated Myofascial Release for a pain free release of the muscles surrounding the larynx. After training massage therapists in the UK, and presenting this work around the world, Stephen has taught this unique, pain free treatment protocol to all the therapists at this clinic.

Vocal Massage is a staple maintenance tool in the performer’s toolkit. An elite athlete would not train or perform without releasing the residual tension that comes from working muscles to extremes, and neither should the elite singer.

What can Vocal Massage therapy successfully help?

  • Globus Pharyngeus / Globus Hystericus a sense of a ‘lump’ in the throat
  • Loss of range or smooth transitions between vocal registers
  • Freeing up the belt voice quality
  • Difficulty swallowing or swallowing disorders
  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia
  • Jaw and tongue root tension
You are 60% of the way to booking your appointment…

Vocal Massage can be used as part of the treatment of rehabilitation for vocal pathology, this can be from any dysfunction such as Muscle Tension Dysphonia/ functional dysphonia, or even Nodules (but working with vocal fold pathologies must see a multidisciplinary team in place), so we would be then working alongside your Speech Therapist and Vocal Rehabilitation Coach.

Because our Vocal Massage has an evidence based approach to the treatment, we don’t need to pound and grip and bruise the muscles on which we are working, instead our integrated MFR has the lightest pressure of any soft tissue bodywork. Every treatment, with any therapist on the team uses a Myofascial approach to help the body change, relax and heal by putting the body into a rest and digest, Vagal state. It’s no secret that the Voice Care Centre has some of the most advanced Myofascial Release (MFR) practitioners in the UK, and with our own literature based research into this field specifically relating to voice, we take this level of expertise to a new level.

This evidence based approach to MFR takes the ‘woo and wah’ out of the treatment protocol and leaves the client engaged and in charge, as the client will be generating verbal feedback, and the therapist will follow the client feedback in order to maximise the outcome of this powerful interaction.

The client centred approach to treatment was pioneered by a Physiotherapist in New York called Walt Fritz, who Stephen can be seen talking with at the video below when Walt journeyed to London in March 2019.

Ronan is part of the first cohort of Vocal Massage therapists to be trained by Stephen in the Certificate in Vocal Myofascial Release.

Qualified from the Brandon Raynor International School of Massage, Ronan first specialised in Deep Tissue Massage before training in vocal massage. Recognising that no client is the same, Ronan provides tailored treatments to suit each individual, whether they have a particular problem/injury or just need to keep on top of their physical well-being.

In 2019, Ronan attended his first Laryngeal Dissection at King’s College, this allowed him to completely understand the structures and science behind vocal myofascial release.

Having trained in Musical Theatre at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and having worked as an actor, director and producer, Ronan understands the needs and demands of those in the Performing Arts Industry. Whilst his clients work in various sectors, Ronan mostly works with performers, athletes and professional singers to eliminate physical and emotional tension. He has recently worked with touring artists at the o2 and Wembley, enabling them to reach their full potential at sold out performances.

Ronan has been successfully running the London Raynor Massage company since 2017. For any deep tissue appointments we are happy to recommend London Raynor Massage.
