What will I learn?

Day 1

Review and revisit the full protocol including

1. Palpation of the soft tissue, cartilage and bone structures surrounding the vocal system. – Sternocleidomastoids – Submandibular region – Transverse processes of the Cervical Spine – Masseter – Temporalis

2. Exploring the Biopsychosocial philosophy in relation to Manual Therapy – Synthesising evidence based medicine, research and the story of the patient to maximum treatment outcomes

3. Seated and supine protocol

4. Palpation and treatment for the muscles and cartilage of the Larynx – Sternothyroid
– Sternohyoid
– Hyoid manipulation
– Cricothyroid
– Thyrohyoid membrane

Day 2

The Arytenoids and posterior Laryngeal region

  1. Learn how to manipulate the arytenoids through careful relational contracting
  2. Explore and refine palpation for the pharyngeal constrictors
  3. Anatomy, function and pathology concerning arytenoids
  4. ⁠⁠Working with vocal fold paralysis and paresis
  5. First student case study slot

Day 3

Reflux and Respiration 1⁠

  1. Begin understanding the structure and function of the diaphragm, intercostal muscles and abdominals in relation to digestion and breathing
  2. Orientate manual therapy treatment techniques in a safe and contracted way in service of optimally functional breathing and reflux related disorders
  3. Lectures on breathing mechanics and reflux (GERD and LPR) and facilitated debates around the current state of diagnostics and assessment methods for hypersensitivity in the throat
  4. Second student case study slot

Day 4

Reflux and Respiration 2

  1. Begin to include abdominal Myofascial release techniques in the treatment of reflux related disorders
  2. Consolidate techniques so far
  3. Add additional counselling skills addressing fear and avoidance in cases of ILO, functional breathing disorders and extreme throat symptoms
  4. Third student case study

Day 5

The wisdom of the body, and what it means to have a voice

  1. Time for debate and provocation on Plato’s recording of Socrates’ “The charm and the cure”, as well as Plato’s Cave.
  2. Fourth student case study slot
  3. Putting in to practise the full treatment protocol in treatment swaps

How many places are there?

Seats are limited in each class to ensure high quality learning takes place, with no more than 10 students

Who can attend this course?

You must have prior experience in Vocal Massage and have completed the Vocal Massage Training Certification.

Safety Protocol

Each student will be informally assessed throughout the learning period.

Written feedback may be given; in some cases, the student may be asked to retake certain modules to meet the satisfactory criteria for passing the course.
