Join the founder of the VOICE CARE CENTRE Stephen King (and his colleagues) for 6 days of intensive Vocal Massage Training at the North Devon clinic.
Over the 6 days, you will be learning in a bigger group with two tutors. The full qualification is taught in these 6 days (as opposed to the 9 days in London, or 12 days of Modular). This is due to the extra tutoring and the slightly longer days.

Stephen King

As a thought leader in the voice health sector, Stephen has been responsible for creating the Voice Care model in the UK, enabling greater access to private voice therapy services from a biopsychosocial perspective. As a Co – Founder of the not for profit Vocal Health Education, he has overseen the education of over 2,000 externally accredited Vocal Health First Aiders and several industry leading Voice Rehabilitation Specialists. As an author, Stephen has co-written Help! I’ve Got A Voice Problem, with further academic articles published in peer reviewed journals.

Within his role as a manual therapy educator, Stephen has delivered masterclasses and seminars across Europe, China and Japan, as well as having written and delivered the UK’s only intensive vocal massage training qualification. Stephen currently sits as the Director of London’s award winning, multidisciplinary Voice Care Centre, where he still occasionally gives treatments to people with voice problems seeking biopsychosocial management of their ongoing issues.  

Day 1, An Introduction to Vocal Massage

What will I learn?

1. Palpation of the soft tissue, cartilage and bone structures surrounding the vocal system. – Sternocleidomastoids

– Submandibular region

– Transverse processes of the Cervical Spine

– Masseter

– Temporalis

2. Exploring the Biopsychosocial philosophy in relation to Manual Therapy

– Synthesising evidence based medicine, research and the story of the patient to maximum treatment outcomes

3. You will be working on the other participants in the group, and watch a clinical example with a real patient too.

4. Learn seated and supine protocol

  • Ideal for those working in clinical and studio settings

Day 2, The Jaw

What will I learn?

1. Palpation and treatment for the Jaw– Masseter

– Temproalis

– Buccinator

– Pterygoid (external)

– Digastric

2. Exploring the Anatomy, Pathology and various treatments associated with the Jaw including

  • TMJ-D
  • Lock Jaw
  • Translation or dislocation of the retrodiscal tissue
  • Headaches
  • Jaw tension in the singer / pro voice user

3. You will be working on the other participants in the group, and watch a clinical example with a real patient too.

4. Learn seated and supine protocol

  • Ideal for those working in clinical and studio settings

Day 3, The Neck

What will I learn?

1. Palpation and treatment for the Neck region and postural muscles– Trapezius

– Sternocleidomastoids

– Transverse Processes of the Cervical Spine

– Scalene

2. Exploring the Anatomy, Pathology and various treatments associated with the Neck including

  • Arterial dissection
  • Cervicogenic Headaches
  • Whiplash
  • Tortocollis
  • Neck tension in the singer / pro voice user

3. You will be working on the other participants in the group, and watch a clinical example with a real patient too.

4. Learn seated and supine protocol

  • Ideal for those working in clinical and studio settings

Day 4, Intra-oral Treatments

What will I learn?

1. Palpation and treatment for the muscles inside the mouth– Lateral Pterygoids

– Medial Pterygoids

– Tongue

2. Exploring the Anatomy, Pathology and various treatments for inside the mouth

  • Trauma Aware lecture, sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse and how we might consider these in our treatment plan
  • TMJ-D
  • Tongue tie
  • Increasing/restoring resonant capabilities in the singer or pro voice user

3. You will be working on the other participants in the group, and watch a clinical example with a real patient too.

4. Learn seated and supine protocol

  • Ideal for those working in clinical and studio settings

Day 5 & 6, Laryngeal Manipulation

What will I learn?

1. Palpation and treatment for the muscles and cartilage of the Larynx– Sternothyroid

– Sternohyoid

– Hyoid manipulation

– Cricothyroid

– Thyrohyoid membrane

2. Exploring the Anatomy, Pathology and various treatments for the Larynx

  • Revisiting trauma Aware lecture, sexual abuse, physical or emotional abuse and how we might consider these in our treatment plan
  • “Lacking tilt”
  • Muscle Tension Dysphonia
  • Hoarseness
  • Fatigue

3. You will be working on the other participants in the group, and watch a clinical example with a real patient too.
