Psychotherapy for Voice Problems

Psychotherapy for voice problems is a unique and specialised offering from the VOICE CARE CENTRE.

A registered psychotherapist with extensive training in somatic and body approaches, Stephen will help facilitate a space where you can be heard and challenged. The process of undergoing a psychotherapy treatment for your voice includes; understanding and accepting how you grieve for a previous voice, addressing the deep seated roots of unhealthy vocal behaviours and even examining, and then addressing the cause of performance anxiety.

Why Psychotherapy for voice?

When we sing, the activation of sound occurs in the brain. The collisions responsible for phonation in the larynx are only a manifestation of that initial thought process. Voice disorders and undiagnosed vocal pathologies all have a psychogenic component, meaning they begin in your psychology but are manifested in your vocal apparatus.

Invested in your healing

At the VOICE CARE CENTRE:

Psychotherapy for your voice problem is bound up in a grieving process for a former sound and self and part of our work together is to determine and then confront three aspects of your psyche:

  1. Your blueprint of grief

  2. How you receive love

  3. Accepting the possibility of change

The intersection of these components can equal a profound shift in your thinking and how you relate to your voice. If you are interested in reading more of my research about this, you can access my latest paper on Grief and Voice Loss here.
